Prosecutor: Newark man faces aggravated assault charges in shootout with police

Officials say that Newark police officers were called to an apartment building on the 700 block of Clinton Ave for a domestic violence call.

A Newark man is facing aggravated assault charges following a shootout with police, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officials say that the incident happened on Monday around 4 a.m. They say that Newark police officers were called to an apartment building on the 700 block of Clinton Ave for a domestic violence call.

Prosecutors say Hakeem Murchison, 30, shot at police officers as they approached him in the hallway of the building. The officers returned fire. They were not injured but did strike Murchison.

Murchison was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. He is now facing charges.

The officers were not injured but were also taken to the hospital per Newark police protocol.
