Newark's mayor has led a motorcade protest to demand more jobs for city residents at the main hub of the Port of New York and New Jersey.

The event was staged Monday morning, not long after a judge refused to block the event.

The Port Authority had argued that the protest would lead to logistical and safety concerns to police officers in the wake of recent police shootings. But a judge told the agency and Newark police to devise a safety plan for the motorcade, which a city spokesman says involved more than 100 vehicles.

Mayor Ras Baraka launched the protest with an address at city hall, then joined other activists as part of the motorcade.

Baraka plans to hold more protests until the hiring demands are met.
