Booking a flight out of Newark Liberty International Airport might start to get a bit harder starting this May. Certain airlines may cut dozens of daily flights due to staffing shortages. Hiring air traffic controllers also seems to be the biggest issue.
The Federal Aviation Administration is essentially reducing flight requirements for airlines that serve Newark and other airports to avoid massive delays. Airlines are typically granted several slots and are expected to fill them. But this won’t be the case from May 15 to Sept. 15 as the reductions could mean nearly 15,000 fewer flights during that time.
"Carriers will be permitted to voluntarily turn in up to 10% of their approved operating timings at EWR for the period from May 15th 2021, through September 15th, 2023, subject to the conditions and limitations in this notice," the FAA said in a statement.
Travelers are concerned about what this’ll mean for flying this summer.
“If they can’t find people to work and you need staff to work and that’s the issue. It’s unfortunate for the people traveling again,” said one traveler named John.
Delta and United have already asked for reductions. Other airlines may begin to do the same. This may come as a much-needed relief for some carriers as summer travel kicks into gear.
