New York Waterway officially christened its newest ferry the “Jackie Robinson.”
The 500-passenger ferry will begin running on Jan. 31. It will provide another transportation option during the temporary closure of the Hoboken PATH station.
The ferry was named for the baseball legend and civil rights pioneer.
“We are honored to have something like this to really honor [our grandfather’s] legacy. But I hope that the next generation will really learn and embrace what we did for society and baseball,” says Sonya Pankey, Jackie Robinson’s granddaughter.
The new ferry will operate year-round on different transit and excursion routes.
