8ds agoThe Department of Transportation is installing new technology at three intersections on Route 1/9 to improve pedestrian safety, following a string of fatal accidents in the area.
It includes a red-light extender, which increases the length of a red light when a pedestrian is in the crosswalk, and a pedestrian detection system that triggers the walk signal when a person is approaching the corner.
These devices have been proven to increase safety, according to transportation officials.
In September, Jose German-Munoz, 34, was hit and killed by a car while crossing at Fairmount Avenue. Surveillance video showed that the driver ran a red light at high speed.
There were four deaths along Route 1/9 during a three-week span over the summer.
