A legendary New Jersey sports figure is sharing news of another health battle as Dick Vitale has announced he has been diagnosed with a new form of cancer.

Vitale said he has melanoma in his lung and liver cavity, marking the fifth cancer diagnosis he has faced in recent years.

The 86‑year‑old is best known as one of the most recognizable voices in college basketball.

Vitale was born in Passaic, grew up in Garfield, and graduated from Seton Hall University. He began his coaching career in the Garfield school system and at his alma mater, East Rutherford High School.

Vitale later became an assistant coach at Rutgers and in the NBA before launching a national broadcasting career.

Despite the diagnosis, Vitale said he is fully confident he will beat the cancer, just as he has before.
