? Residents in Newark and throughout the Garden State are doing their best to stay cool amid high temperatures Monday.
The Boylan Street Pool in Newark was designated a cooling center for the city. Lifeguards there say they?re keeping a sharp eye out to keep people safe amid an expected spike in attendance. The lifeguards themselves say they?ll be taking a dip on breaks to keep their body temperatures down.
But as the temperatures rise, some firefighters are trying to stop a popular method of cooling down. Throughout the day, kids and adults were cooling off in front of open fire hydrants. However, firefighters say opening the hydrants can be dangerous. Firefighters say when the hydrants are opened, water pressure is lowered and there may not be enough pressure to battle a fire.
Meanwhile, residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, but avoid beverages with caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar. Residents are also urged to get out of the heat and into the AC. Even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help individuals better cope with the high temperatures outside. If outdoor activity is necessary, a hat and sunscreen is recommended to prevent sunburn.
