It’s the season for porch pirates and law enforcement officers are warning the public to be extra careful as those holiday deliveries arrive.
One such incident was recorded on video in Gloucester Township. A doorbell camera recorded two suspects running up to a home and grabbing an Amazon package. One suspect is seen taunting the camera by twerking. The pair then runs away.
The victims shared their home video on the Ring Neighbors app to alert the community. That video didn’t scare off the suspects - who returned not once, but twice. One suspect even spoke to the camera, saying “Not cool bro, c'mon, not cool,” in response to the victim posting the original video.
Police are now urging all New Jersey residents to be extra cautious as the holidays approach.
"Clearly during this time of year would be the time they would be plentiful because people getting packages delivered and so forth for the holidays," says Perth Amboy Police Chief Lawrence Cattano.
Perth Amboy police are happy to report they haven’t seen a significant uptick in stolen packages.
Cattano shared some tips for all to follow. He recommends people take their packages in right away or plan ahead.
"Get deliveries when somebody is going to be home," said Cattano. "Take advantage of these drop boxes that many companies offer."
Videos like the one captured in Gloucester Township can assist police in their investigation.
"Whether they be doorbell cameras, or spotlight cameras, any kind of cameras, all of that helps. All of that can be put together to assist us in doing our job," said Cattano.
The chief also urges people to call the police if they see something wrong at a neighbor's house or if they see thieves in action. But Cattano warns people not to engage with the thieves.
He says to be the best witness you can be by remembering license plate numbers, remembering a description of the individual, or by taking videos or photos.
"You really wanted to have [your package[ for Christmas, for Hannukah, whatever that is, you really wanted to have it, but it’s not worth injury or life for. You can always get it replaced," said Cattano.
As for those porch pirates in Gloucester Township, police are asking for the public to help. They shared the video for more information and to identify the suspects.
