The death of a New Jersey man has prompted health officials to warn the public about a new meat allergy spread by ticks.

The 47-year-old died hours after eating a hamburger last summer, according to authorities.

This is the first ever death to be attributed to the allergy caused by bites from the lone-star tick.

The allergy increases sensitivity to beef, pork and lamb. It is known to induce abdominal pain and vomiting.

Physicians urge people to stay away from deer, who are a prime breeding ground for lone star ticks.
