(07/08/06) TRENTON ? The bells and rings of slot machines rang out across Atlantic City Saturday morning, as New Jersey casinos reopened. The casinos were given the okay to reopen at 7 a.m., just after the state Legislature passed the $30.9 billion budget. It was the first time since legalized gambling started in 1978 that the casinos were forced to close. About 36,000 casino workers were temporarily out of work during the shutdown. Around 7:30 the first gamblers took their seats at the slots on the casino floors. Lottery ticket sales have also resumed. Horses are running at Monmouth Saturday afternoon and at the Meadowlands Saturday night.
