The Princeton University basketball team is on its way to the Sweet 16! News 12 New Jersey visited the Ivy League on Nassau Street, home of the No. 15 seeded Tigers, to see how students are celebrating the victory.
The Tigers' win over Missouri Saturday means they’ll play again this Friday vs. Creighton. It wasn’t quite pandemonium in Princeton. At least not yet. The University store in downtown Princeton is quiet. Outside looks like any other normal day. Yes, students are just returning from spring break, but their Ivy League champion Tigers men’s basketball team is heading to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.
“I know it’s so quiet, but they’re there. I know they’re excited and they’ll come out,” Nina Dugger of Princeton said. “This is great for Princeton. This is great for New Jersey."
Naomi Vaida is a Princeton student from Ireland. Although she's not much of a sports fan, she says she recognizes the excitement of Princeton making it this far in the tournament.
“Sports is unifying. It builds community, and I think that even people like me who might not be too involved with it feel very proud that they’ve gone so far, which they haven’t done in years,” Vaida said.
It may seem like a normal start to the week around the Princeton University, but the excitement will ramp up even more as we get closer to Friday’s game. Those who work at the University Store on Nassau Street believe students will begin grabbing more gear.
