As Fire Prevention Week begins, Nassau County fire officials are urging residents to take simple steps to protect their homes after seven house fires broke out across the county over the weekend.

One of the most dramatic blazes tore through a home in Massapequa, where nearly 100 firefighters responded to the fire on Clock Boulevard. Four people were displaced.

According to Nassau Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro, firefighters rescued people from two of the seven fires. In two separate cases, the homes did not have working smoke detectors. One person was injured in a fire in North Hills.

With colder temperatures approaching, fire officials warn that the risk of house fires increases as residents begin using heating systems, fireplaces, fire pits and other seasonal equipment.

Uttaro said the most important safety measure is ensuring smoke detectors are installed and working properly.

“The single biggest thing that leads to people’s injuries and unfortunately fatalities is not having working smoke detectors and smoke alarms throughout your home,” Uttaro said.

The fire marshal also recommends having heating systems inspected before winter and taking extra precautions when using candles, fireplaces and fire pits.

“Dispose of those embers in a metal trash can and keep it away from the home,” Uttaro said.

Officials also advise residents not to use extension cords to power space heaters or other heavy-duty appliances.
