The Montclair Board of Education voted Wednesday night to close Renaissance Middle School beginning next school year.

Students will be placed in other schools throughout the district.

Montclair school officials say the district faces a nearly $20 million budget gap, even though residents already pay an average of $22,000 per year in property taxes.

Voters recently approved paying an average of more than $1,000 more in property taxes, but it still was not enough to keep the school open.

Current school officials blame poor decision-making by the prior administration — not fraud, just bad choices.

No word yet on what will happen to teachers at Renaissance Middle School, but this decision will not lead to a balanced budget.
