An Essex County home that once belonged to a pair of Russian spies will soon be up for sale.
The house on Marquette Road in Montclair once belonged to Vladimir and Lydia Guryev. The couple was arrested in 2010 for working undercover for the Russian government. They were known as the Murphys to their neighbors.
Their story was the basis for the television series “The Americans,” which is about Russian spies living in the United States in the 1980s.
The couple pleaded guilty to the crimes and the home has stood vacant ever since. It was turned over to the United States government, and then to a bank.
A new owner who purchased the house for $340,000 says that he plans to fix it up and resell it.
“As we were going through the property I recognized it and it looked familiar and then [the realtor] started to tell me about the history and that was the first time I learned about the spy house history,” new owner Jeremy MacDonald, of North NJ House Buyers, tells News 12 New Jersey.
Records show that the Guryevs purchased the Montclair home in 2008 under their assumed names for a little more than $480,000.
MacDonald says that the home will have a new look later this summer.
