Neighbors say off-campus housing for Monmouth University students has caused problems for Ocean Township, but police say new measures are helping to keep the peace.
According to the Long Branch Police Department, it has had fewer incidents with college students due to preemptive patrolling by the Quality of Life Task Force. Instead of waiting for calls from angry neighbors, the task force along with Monmouth University Police, comb the streets on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
Twenty Monmouth University students were recently charged with underage drinking at a residence in Ocean. The university has said that penalties can include community service, fines and suspension. Officials say the penalties are enacted as a deterrent for underage drinking.
Renting in Long Branch has also become much harder since the town gives out one certificate of occupancy per year now per rental. Some students say since they can?t rent in Long Branch they are forced to seek off-campus housing in Ocean Township.
So far, 55 to 60 students have been charged under the university?s code of conduct.
