Monday marked Sen. Bob Menendez’s last full day in office. The convicted senator’s resignation takes effect on Tuesday.
Gov. Phil Murphy announced last week that he has appointed his former Chief of Staff George Helmy to serve out the remainder of Menendez’s term.
The Democrat was convicted earlier this year of bribery and acting as a foreign agent. He later announced that he would resign from his position as a senator. Menendez also withdrew from his reelection campaign running as an independent.
Helmy will be sworn in when the Senate returns from summer recess in September.
Who will officially take over Menendez’s seat will be decided in the November election. Democrat Rep. Andy Kim and Republican Curtis Bashaw will battle it out for the seat.
Menendez is expected to be sentenced in October.
