Sen. Bob Menendez has withdrawn from the U.S. Senate race as an independent candidate.
The Democrat was recently convicted of federal bribery and corruption charges. Earlier this year, he announced that he would not seek reelection as a Democrat, but did file to run as an independent.
In a letter obtained by News 12, Menendez told the New Jersey Division of Elections that he would be withdrawing his name from the ballot in November’s election.
Menendez resigned from his position following his conviction, effective on Aug. 20. Gov. Phil Murphy on Friday named former chief of staff George Helmy as Menendez’s replacement until January.
Rep. Andy Kim won the Democratic nomination for Menendez’s Senate seat. He will go up against Republican Curtis Bashaw.
