New Jersey residents honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as Thursday marked the 40th anniversary of the civil rights giant's assassination.
Tributes to the slain reverend were paid in Elizabeth at a function thrown by the United Youth Council Incorporated of Elizabeth. The site of commemoration was right between City Hall and Elizabeth High School, near a plaque commemorating King's message of peace and equality.
Both somber and excited tones filled the day. Elizabeth celebrants observed a moment of silence in mourning of King, but were later entertained by the dance styling of local children.
The poor weather couldn't sour the tributes or the mood. Speakers echoed the sentiments of King, saying they wouldn't let the rain take away from his message.
The council will continue it's honoring as it celebrates its 25th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Ceremony. The event honors the work of people who continue with King's message.
