A new plan to more than double school taxes may lead to keeping three schools open in Middletown.
The New Jersey Department of Education informed school district officials that the district qualifies for what is called a new tax incentive program aimed at helping eligible districts generate revenue.
This news coming after parents overwhelmed the most recent school board meeting when they received the news that budgetary issues may lead to the closing and/or changes at three schools, including Leonardo and Navesink elementary as well as Bayshore Middle School.
But now, if families in town are apparently willing to pay an additional 5.2% in school taxes, on top of the 4.8% increase already in the budget, this all for a grand total of a 10.1% tax increase in next year's budget, they may be able to keep the schools open.
The next community forum will include this possible option and will be discussed.
The forum is set for tomorrow night from 6-8 p.m. at Middletown High School North.
