Bob Menendez's defense team will present its case this Monday as the New Jersey senator's corruption trial enters its eighth week.
Attorneys for Menendez will now have their chance to defend him of charges that include bribery, fraud and obstruction of justice.
Menendez has said time and again he has done nothing wrong. So the question to be answered is will he take the stand in his own defense and tell jurors his side of the story?
The prosecution has stated that Menendez and his wife Nadine accepted thousands of dollars in cash and gold bars. The prosecution has also said both accepted a new $60,000 Mercedes Benz in return for favors for friends of the couple.
Those friends include Wael Hanna, the owner of ISEG Halal, and real estate developer Fred Daibes.
The allegation is that Daibes got help with a bank fraud prosecution while Menendez helped Hana become the sole certifier of Halal meat imported by Egypt.
It is expected that the defense will say Menendez never accepted any bribes and that the Mercedes and gold belonged to Nadine and were merely gifts from generous friends.
What the prosecution terms officials acts, or favors, the defense will likely say was simply his work for constituents.
However, before the prosecution rested on Friday, they brought in a jeweler who helped Nadine sell off $250,000 in gold bars and coins, items that the prosecution is trying to connect to the defendants.
Nadine Menendez is also a defendant in this case.
She will have her own trial in August.
