A Mays Landing man was killed early Saturday morning in a single-vehicle crash in Hamilton Township, Atlantic County, authorities said.

Police responded at approximately 12:40 a.m. to the area of Route 40 and Strand Avenue for a reported crash, according to the Township of Hamilton Police Department.

A preliminary investigation found that a 2015 Cadillac XTS driven by William Bussey III, 41, lost control while heading eastbound on Route 40.

The vehicle left the roadway via the westbound shoulder and struck several trees before coming to rest, police said.

Bussey sustained major trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only person in the car and was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, authorities said.

Route 40 was closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated, police said.
