Federal judge to abolish East Ramapo school board election systemA federal judge has ruled that the current-at-large election process for East Ramapo school board is unjust. A lawsuit filed by the Spring Valley chapter of NAACP and several minority voters claimed the school board’s system operated to exclude the votes of African Americans and Latinos. The group advocates the election of board members by wards. The ruling states that the judge now wants the district to be divided into nine voting wards.
Officials: Person in custody for questioning regarding North Plainfield fireOfficials in North Plainfield are working to find the cause of an early morning fire that started in a vacant home under construction, and a person has been brought into custody for questioning regarding the fire, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor. The fire started just before 3 a.m. at a two-story home under construction on Maple Avenue, and spread to the ones on each side of it. Firefighters all morning put out hotspots from the fire that left at least six people without homes and sent a firefighter to the hospital.
NYCB LIVE to host drive-in movie weekend at Nassau ColiseumNYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, announced that it will host a drive-in movie weekend this Friday. The first movie will be "Trolls" on May 29. It will be followed by multiple showtimes available throughout the weekend.The movies will be displayed on a large backlit LED screen outside the venue facing Hempstead Turnpike.
'Never in a million years' - Friends of Peter Manfredonia shocked over accusations of murder, kidnappingFriends of Peter Manfredonia, who is the center of a multistate hunt after being accused of killing two people, say they're shocked and call him a 23-year-old who couldn't hurt a fly. "Never in a million years did I think, know he's going to hurt someone else," said one of his friends who asked to remain anonymous. Manfredonia is accused of killing two people along with other crimes committed during Memorial Day weekend, police say.
NYPD: Man fatally shoots ex’s boyfriend during custody drop-off at Gowanus HousesOne man is dead and another in police custody after a fight inside the Gowanus Houses. Police were called to the scene at 235 Hoyt St. just before 4 p.m. Tuesday. That is where they found a 34-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
