Hundreds of people gathered on Wednesday for the funeral of fallen Deptford Police Officer Robert Shisler at a ceremony held at Rowan University.

Shisler, 27, was on the force for four years. His casket was draped in an American flag. Fellow officer carried it into Pfleeger Hall on the university’s campus.

Friends and family had a chance to enter and pay their respects. They were followed by a sea of uniformed police officers from throughout the state.

Shisler’s sister spoke during the service.

"He was brave, devoted, fearless and selfless,” Ashley Shisler said. "I want to treasure his life he shared with us over the pain that his death has brought us."

Shisler was shot in the leg in March while on duty. He had gotten into a struggle with a man named Mitchell Negron, whom he had stopped on Delsea Drive in Deptford. Shisler returned fire, killing Negron. Shisler was critically injured and died several weeks later, on May 7.

"Thankfully line-of-duty death funerals are far and few between in the state of New Jersey.  But it's just a reminder as to how dangerous our jobs are,” said Peter Andreyev, of the New Jersey State Police Benevolent Association.

Police officers lined the route out of the university after the service as helicopters flew overhead. Pipers then led the way on foot as the family and hearse followed.

Shisler is the first policeman from the Deptford police force to die in the line of duty.
