Police officers from across the Garden Sate gathered in Paterson Tuesday to honor their fallen comrades.
The Blue Mass was held to remember five New Jersey law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
?We mourn their deaths but we celebrate their lives through the Mass,? said Paterson Police Chief James Wittig.
Of those remembered was Paterson Police Officer Tyron Franklin. The 23-year-old was off-duty when he was killed in January. Franklin?s mother said his young son often calls his name.
The officers? deaths don?t just affect family members. The colleagues of fallen officers are offered counseling services after their deaths.
The Mass also honored Newark Sergeant Tommaso Popolizio and FBI Agent Barry Lee Bush. Popolizio was killed after a high-speed chase crash. Bush was killed by friendly fire while investigating a string of bank robberies.
