Bridgeport police are working to identify a body found decomposing in a pond in Beardsley Park.

Police believe the body was in the water for about a week.

Detective Jeffrey Holtz says the man's body was fully clothed, and he had several personal items on him.

A pair of fishermen discovered the body at Bunnell's Pond Sunday night. Investigators are still trying to determine the man's identity.

Holtz says police are using a mix of forensic science and missing persons reports to identify the man.

"We will come up with an answer," Holtz says. "It may take a little bit of time. I know families don't want to hear that."

Holtz says there have been numerous drownings at the pond over the years, and that's why swimming isn't allowed there.

Results from an autopsy to determine the man's cause of death were still pending as of Monday night, but police don't believe any foul play was involved.

The community is praying for the man's family.

"Obviously, losing a loved one is always extremely difficult to deal with," Ash Dimbo, of Bridgeport, says. "It's just heartbreaking."

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Stavros Mirtsopoulos at 203-581-5256.
