A New Jersey man is safely on the ground after he climbed to the top of an amusement ride at Casino Pier in Seaside Heights to protest what he says is unfair treatment by the local police department.
“Nobody even knows I’m up here yet,” Chris Angulo said in a video sent to News 12 New Jersey.
Angulo climbed the 160-foot tall Skyscraper Tower ride just after sunrise on Monday and planted an American flag. Police quickly became aware that Angulo was up on the tower.
Angulo told News 12 New Jersey that he climbed the ride because he felt that police unfairly targeted him up and down Barnegat Bay Island.
“He’s had some problems in the past. We don’t want the kid to get hurt,” says Seaside Heights Police Chief Tommy Boyd. “He brought a flag up there, which is patriotic. That’s nice. But we’re worried about this safety.”
Angulo was up on the tower for about four hours. During that time, he even live-streamed whales in the ocean. But eventually, police talked him into coming down. He was taken into custody and awaits criminal charges. Police say that he will also undergo a mental health evaluation.
This is not the first time Angulo has been in the news. Three months after Superstorm Sandy, Angulo rowed out to the half-sunk Star Jet roller coaster, climbed to the top and also placed an American flag.
