A Hudson County man has admitted stealing more than $250,000 from a Jersey City agency that provides education to underprivileged children and used the money to buy a Maserati and expensive mink coat.

Prosecutors say Robert Mays pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court in Newark to charges he raised his own salary without approval by nearly $60,000 after working for Jersey City Child Development Centers Inc. for two months.

Mays, of Jersey City, also admitted that he created fake board of directors' minutes to make it look like his raise had been approved.

Prosecutors say he also admitted to taking money from the company's bank account to pay for the car, coat and other expenses.

He faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced on Sept. 20.

Mays will also be required to pay back all the money he stole, as well as hand over the title to the Maserati and return the mink coat.
