A 29-year-old man who was fatally shot Sunday night in Trenton has been identified as Maicol Eliezer Metzler Chic, of Trenton, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office.
Prosecutors said a preliminary investigation indicates Metzler Chic was shot during an attempted robbery of three men.
Trenton police responded around 11:40 p.m. to the 600 block of Whittaker Avenue for a report of a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers found Metzler Chic unresponsive and provided CPR before he was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora said Metzler Chic was originally from Guatemala and was walking home with two other people when they were approached by two men and Metzler Chic was shot.
Gusciora said he met with Metzler Chic's family and directed the city's social services team to offer assistance. The mayor also said he spoke with Guatemalan Consul General Hugo Hun Archila about arrangements to return Metzler Chic's remains to Guatemala.

The mayor has asked Trenton police to increase patrols in the area following the shooting.
"This marks the sixth homicide in our city this year, and every life lost to violence is a loss for our entire community," Gusciora said in a statement.
