An Elizabeth family says that they are on edge after someone broke into their home and rummaged around for about an hour while they slept.

Claudia Rocha is a single mother living with her two daughters in what she describes as a relatively quiet area of Elizabeth. But she says that on Sunday night someone broke into her first-floor home for the second time in a year.

“What is the reason for you to come to my home? What are you looking for?” Rocha asks.

Rocha’s teen daughter happened to be awake in the basement and heard an unusual number of footsteps upstairs. She opened an app on her phone to look at the security cameras upstairs and found the unknown person with what appeared to be rope and a knife. The teen called Rocha's phone immediately letting her know what she saw.

“I was panicked. I was like frozen,” Rocha says.

Rocha says that she was able to regain her composure and called the police, causing the burglar to run away with her purse. Police arrived minutes later.

“It was scary because I see that he could’ve attacked me and tied me up with a rope or something else. Or he could attack me with a knife he had in his hands,” Rocha says.

No one was hurt. But the ordeal left the family scared and paranoid that the burglar will come back.

"I feel like I can't even sleep…thinking somebody's going to get into my house and do something to me and my kids,” Rocha says.

The family is now borrowing a dog for protection, will install a new security system and will also look for a new place to live.

Rocha says that since the burglar appeared to touch items inside of the home, she is hoping he can be identified through fingerprints. Elizabeth police say that they are investigating and are pursuing leads.
