Little League umpire allegedly assaulted by coach files lawsuit
A Little League umpire who was allegedly attacked by a coach last month during a game has filed a lawsuit against the coach, the team and the organization that ran the tournament.
Authorities say that coach Jerry Otero attacked umpire James Neely, 72, during a game for 13-year-olds on June 4 in Branchburg.
An attorney for Neely says he suffered a concussion and multiple fractures in his jaw, which will “likely require further surgery to correct.”
Neely is seeking damages for his injuries.
“People’s behavior at youth travel sports have become completely out of control. Now we will seek justice for Mr. Neely in the courts, and make sure the kids at all sport events are protected,” attorney Andrew O’Connor, of the law firm Nagel Rice, said in a statement.
Otero was charged with aggravated assault and assault at a youth sports event.
