Several thunderstorms crossed New Jersey Thursday evening, bringing lots of lightning and even some flash flooding.
Lightning may be to blame for at least two fires in the state.
A gas main ruptured in Hardyston Thursday evening and electrical wires also came down. Officials believe the storm is to blame. Neighbors in the area reported seeing lightning and hearing a loud boom right before the fire ignited.
Hardyston police say that the entire stretch of Route 94 in town will be shut in both directions indefinitely while the gas main is repaired.
Firefighters in North Brunswick battled a house fire on Jessica Lane. Crews said that they had some difficulty fighting the flames due to hot weather conditions. Officials believe the storm may also be to blame for the fire. No injuries were reported.
The National Weather Service has not been able to confirm either incident was caused by lightning.
The storms also brought some heavy rain. Parts of Boss Road in Ringoes were flooded out for a time.
Several thousand customers were left without power Thursday night. At the height of the storm, there were nearly 15,000 customers affected.
