Residents across New Jersey are divided over the growing presence of license plate reading cameras, commonly known as Flock cameras.
Unlike traditional security cameras, Flock cameras collect information about every vehicle that passes through their field of view, regardless of whether a moving violation has been committed.
They record a vehicle's license plate number, make, model and color. The cameras also document the location, date and time the vehicle was recorded.
The information is stored in Flock's cloud-based system and can be shared with law enforcement agencies, municipalities and universities that participate in the network.
For those interested in tracking camera locations, a website called DeFlock maintains a database of known Flock camera installations. According to the site, the cameras are located throughout much of New Jersey.
The expanding network has generated mixed reactions from residents.
Some support the added surveillance.
"It's good to have. It would keep the neighborhood safe," said one Jersey City resident.
Others, however, view the cameras as a step too far.
"It is an invasion of privacy. I don't want people to know where I am, where I'm going," said a Bridgewater resident. "I don't even know why we need those in here."
According to Flock Safety, the technology is designed to help law enforcement agencies solve crimes faster.
The cameras are often installed in high-traffic locations, including near shopping centers, major roadways and busy intersections.
