A Sussex County high school was evacuated Tuesday night amid storm damage and tornado warnings.
Faculty, students and parents were holding an end-of-the-year athletics dinner at Lenape Valley Regional High School in Stanhope when a powerful storm moved through the area. The storm caused some damage to a part of the school and also damaged trees on the property.
Officials say that about 50 to 100 people were inside the school at the time. They were moved to a safe area and then escorted to their vehicles.
Police say that two people were injured when a tree fell on their car in the parking lot. Police say that the people sustained some cuts and scrapes, but otherwise refused medical attention.
The high school will be closed Wednesday while crews assess and clean up the damage.
Weather officials will determine if a tornado actually touched down in the town Tuesday evening. New Jersey saw three separate tornado warnings in areas all around the state.
The storms produced lots of rain, strong winds, hail and thunder and lighting. There were reports of downed trees and utility poles all around the state, with thousands of utility customers experiencing power outages.
