Last ‘Wright Aeronautical’ box found in New Jersey
A rare piece of history connected to the Wright Brothers may have been found in a New Jersey estate sale.
Oakland resident Joe Porus says that he bought a box for $5 30 years ago after he saws the words “Wright Aeronautical” stamped on the side. That is the name given to the airplane company owned by the Wright Brothers after it was sold and moved to New Jersey in 1917. The boxes were used to ship tools and plane parts.
“If Orville [Wright] were here today, he would be tickled pink because it’s got his name on it,” Porus says. “It’s the last company that has ‘Wright’ up front where it’s supposed to be.”
Porus says that Orville Wright was angry after his company merged with Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company in the 1920s because his name wasn’t first and the Wright Brothers were the inventors of the airplane.
The Smithsonian and Paterson museums have both reviewed photos of the box and have tentatively confirmed its authenticity.
The box may be the last one from the factory.
