A large fire damaged a refurbished mattress warehouse in Passaic Wednesday afternoon.
The fire was first reported around 3 p.m. at Citi Mattress located at 35 Eighth St.
Officials say that the fire started somewhere inside the factory among a stack of mattresses, which were stacked 10 to 12 deep.
Once the mattresses became waterlogged, they weighed hundreds of pounds, making them very difficult to move.
Firefighters were forced to battle the fire from inside of the building. Passaic Mayor Hector Lora says that there were initially some problems with water pressure, but those issues were resolved.
Fire officials say that the flames spread to the building, but were knocked down quickly by firefighters.
Lora says the fire hurts more than just the business.
“This is a particular business that, throughout the year when we find ourselves in need - whether we find a needy family or those who are displaced - they offer to donate mattresses to City Hall to make sure we can get it to the needy,” Lora says.
Several firefighters sustained some minor injuries. No civilians were injured.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
