A popular senior tradition at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) has been canceled due to a lack of interest.
Many students say they lost interest in TCNJ?s senior week because the school decided to make it alcohol-free. Traditionally, seniors spend the week before graduation sleeping in their old freshman dorms. In past years, the school has allowed students to drink in the buildings during that time. However, school officials say they decided to ban alcohol because of binge drinking and damage concerns.
Although the school had plans to bus students to bars and other events with alcohol, there just wasn?t enough interest. Some students say the ban on alcohol has to do with a TCNJ student?s death last year. Freshman John Fiocco Jr. disappeared after a party last year. His body was later found in a landfill in Pennsylvania. Police believe Fiocco somehow ended up in a dumpster outside his dorm. However, school officials say they would never make a policy change on an isolated incident.
