Some PATH train riders will soon have to plan new routes. The Hoboken PATH station terminal will be shut down for 25 days starting Jan. 31.
The closure is part of a $430 million PATH Forward program to address aging infrastructure. Crews will replace thousands of feet of track and rehab the terminal.
According to Clarelle DeGraffe, director/general manager of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, "it's critical because it allows the safe movement of our trains." The Port Authority has worked to provide alternative options for riders, including:
  • NY Waterways ferry service will cross-honor PATH ticket holders for the 25-day period
  • New Jersey Transit will increase bus service on the 126 to the Port Authority in Midtown and on the light rail to Newport and Exchange Place
  • Free shuttle buses will carry riders to other PATH stations
Riders seem to be taking the closure in stride, with one rider saying "I like the PATH and once they do this, I hope my commute will be just as convenient."
The Port Authority will have representatives at stations on Jan. 14 and 15 to answer questions, and a virtual information session will be held on Jan. 21. Riders can also use the RidePATH app to get more information.
