The Hudson County town of Kearny?s jobless rate has hit double digits.
Towns across the Garden State are inching higher and higher as the economy flounders. Kearny?s unemployment rate is nearly 11 percent.
To get a sign of the town?s grim economic state, one only needs to talk to Alice Song, proprietor of Kearny Jewelry. Song says she?s lucky to get even five customers a day.
?They come here not to buy jewelry, but to sell their own,? Song says.
Store owners like Song had hoped business would be sparked by tax refunds, but it?s just not coming to fruition.
?It's already March, and I didn't see any single customer come here and tell [me], I got a tax return and I want to buy a present for my family," Song says.
Kearny?s situation isn?t the worst in the state and it is better than some others. Trenton has the highest unemployment rate in New Jersey at 17 percent, while Washington Township is faring the best at only 2 percent.
