A judge has ruled that Englewood Cliffs Mayor Mario Kranjac does not have the authority to suspend Police Chief Michael Cioffi.
Mayor Kranjac moved to put Cioffi on administrative leave after he was caught on a recording saying he wanted to kill a borough councilwoman.
The move was immediately decried by council Democrats, who accused the mayor of overstepping.
Through his attorney, Cioffi has said his remarks were just a joke.
Kranjac says it is now up to the council members to suspend the police chief.
