Two Washington Township police officers "dug deep" to help a neighbor in need early Monday morning in Gloucester County.

The department received a call around 1 a.m. from an elderly resident who was fearful he wouldn't be able to leave his home in an emergency due to the buildup of snow and ice.

Officers Mike Scheer and Lou DeStefano responded to the Whitman Square development and shoveled the walkway and front steps for the resident, who is also a veteran.

The good deed even elicited an offer of payment and hot coffee, which the officers politely declined.
