Major League Baseball is currently in the middle of spring training. Players are down in Florida and Arizona.
But there was a time when spring training meant the Jersey Shore for the Yankees and the old New York Giants.
The Yankees trained in Asbury Park at the high school in 1943. World War II limited train transportation in the United States, so New York teams couldn’t go to Florida.
The Yankees then practiced in Atlantic City in 1944 and 1945. The Giants worked out at the old Rockefeller Estate in Lakewood in 1943 and 1944.
