Mount Laurel named its first female police chief this month as it marked the birthday of a native suffragist.
Judy Lynn Schiavone, who has served 24 years on the township’s force, was promoted from deputy chief last week. As police chief, she'll now lead a department of 73 officers.
Mount Laurel's history with women's rights started Jan. 11, 1885 with the birth of Alice Paul. She became a leading proponent of a woman's right to vote.
The 19th Amendment finally passed in 1885.
Paul's grave in Cinnaminson is frequently visited, where people leave behind notes of thanks.
