Congratulations to the rookie class of lifeguards on Long Beach Island for surviving “The Gauntlet.” This is what they call a part of their training regimen.

Participants get on a Coast Guard ship and are taken offshore. They then jump and must swim three-quarters of a mile back to the beach.

After they do that, they go back into the ocean for simulated rescues. They paddle out to victims and then back to the beach for CPR practice.

About a dozen rookies in Barnegat Light made it through the test and are ready to serve the community.
