The very first Navy ship named after the city of Newark was commissioned on this day 132 years ago.
The cruiser hosted hundreds of sailors over a 35-year career, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans during the Spanish-American war and the Philippine-American war.
It eventually left service as a hospital ship in 1926.
