Jersey Proud: First U.S.S. Newark commissioned on this day in history

The cruiser hosted hundreds of sailors over a 35-year career, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans during the Spanish-American war and the Philippine-American war.

It eventually left service as a hospital ship in 1926.
