Did you know that Atlantic City was the first seaside community in the country to install a boardwalk by the beach?
The Atlantic City Boardwalk first opened on June 26, 1870. It was an idea by engineer Richard Osborne.
People staying at Atlantic City hotels would often bring sand from the beach back into the hotels via their shoes and feet. It was becoming a problem to clean up.
Osborne thought of the idea of creating a buffer between the beach and hotels so that sand wouldn’t be tracked into the hotels as often.
