Jersey City fireworks relocated from Liberty State Park
Although Jersey City was unable to hold its annual Fourth of July celebration at Liberty State Park Tuesday, the festivities instead were held at Exchange Place.
Mayor Steven Fulop said that Liberty State Park was the best location in the country to celebrate the Fourth of July, but with the failure in government in Trenton, as he called it, he just wasn't willing to gamble and had to make a final decision on Saturday.
The mayor added that security was easier than at the park because it is confined and not wide open.
Lawmakers passed the state budget in Trenton just before 10 p.m. Monday and Gov. Chris Christie signed it Tuesday morning, leading to the opening of all parks and beaches.
"The DEP has been ordered by me to have all state parks open tomorrow morning at normal time and an orderly opening of state government will happen when business is to open after the state holiday tomorrow on Wednesday July 5," said Gov. Christie in a statement. "Folks who are off tomorrow, on a state holiday, because of special action that I've taken tonight, through the signing of the letter to the civil service commission will be paid."
