A Raritan Borough man who struck and killed a 1-year-old boy while driving under the influence was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Ronald Rebernik pleaded guilty in December to vehicular homicide and assault by auto.
The 62-year-old was under the influence of heroin July 7, 2018 when he lost control of his car and struck a family of three, killing 1-year-old Matias Ortega and injuring the baby’s mother and 5-year-old brother.
Rebernik had been arrested earlier that day on drug charges. He was allegedly found with heroin and crack cocaine hours before the crash, but was released under the state’s bail reform laws.
The family was just coming back from celebrating Matias’s first birthday.
