A radio host's latest apology for racist, sexual remarks about the Rutgers University Lady Scarlet Knights has done little to pacify students.
Don Imus issued an apology Friday on his WFAN-AM show, which is also broadcast on MSNBC, for calling players "nappy-headed hos" on Wednesday. "It was completely inappropriate and I understand why people were offended. My characterization was thoughtless and stupid and we're sorry," said the veteran broadcaster.
Students at the New Brunswick campus expressed shock and disgust over the comments, as did many national figures. "We're so proud of them and to have something like that put on them right after this great season that they had, that's really sad," said sophomore Kerrin O'Connell. Some want the radio host to address students in person or to write an apology letter.
A spokeswoman for WFAN's parent company, CBS Radio, said Saturday there was no additional comment on the issue. However, WFAN and MSNBC both condemned the comments and WFAN promised to closely monitor the show.
Rutgers University and the NCAA have issued a joint statement saying they were offended by the remarks, and Rev. Al Sharpton is calling for Imus' resignation. Critics point to past controversial comments made on the show as reasons for Imus to quit.
