Hundreds of Bronx apartments have been without gas since Thursday, and officials say it could be weeks until gas service is restored.
Residents of the Moore Houses on 149th Street and Jackson Avenue say their ovens and stoves remained cold Friday after officials turned off the gas due to a corroded pipe. Heat and hot water were restored to the complex Thursday evening.
The Housing Authority is handing out hotplates to people in need of a home cooked meal. One resident says she was forced to send her eight children to school with junk food.
According to Lou Torres, president of the Tenants Association, the best case scenario would take a week and a half for the corroded pipe to be replaced and the gas turned back on. Once the pipe is fixed, Torres says each apartment would be inspected to make sure the system is working properly. If any apartment fails inspection, Torres says the entire repair could take a month or longer.
