373ds agoMore than 1,000 came out to Liberty State Park in Jersey City on Wednesday for a massive Juneteenth celebration.
Juneteenth marks the anniversary of the last American slaves being freed in Texas in 1865.
Organizers say hosting the event in Jersey City - with the Statue of Liberty visible right next to the stage - was an easy decision.
“I envision that this will one day be celebrated like July 4,” said All About Us co-founder Shannon Mitchell.
“It's really just about celebrating freedom and being together and celebrating African American culture,” says Nyasha, a Bloomfield resident.
“I hope folks take away unity and family. That's what we're really all about,” says Jersey City Council President Joyce Watterman.
Dr. Opal Lee, 97, is regarded as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.” She was influential at getting the day recognized as a national holiday. Lee is one of the event’s sponsors.
